To provide quality full-scope adolescent substance abuse treatment for one of the highest “at-risk” populations in the nation. Our professional and confidential manner which we engage youth is to exemplify our respect, and compassion for those we serve. Our commitment to working collaboratively with community resources provides a robust network of services available to foster youth.
Koinonia has seen hundreds of youth come through our programs. Common issues experienced are the following: There is a lot of trauma they need to heal from, they are behind in their required high school credits for graduation, and they don’t have the skills necessary to thrive in adulthood. Koinonia has a whole-person approach that addresses each of these.
All 8 of our programs have intensive therapy for all youth. Sites have a dedicated therapist to facilitate individual, family, and group therapy weekly. Therapists are available for crisis intervention. A range of approaches are implemented, from CBT to EMDR and addressing the family system. Other practices include weekly art and equine therapy. Additionally, staff are trained in Trauma Informed Care, Crisis Prevention and Intervention. Youth are assisted with emotional regulation when struggling. Whenever possible, family reunification is the number one goal. Countless families have reported gratitude for the therapy they have received.
Youth at almost all of our programs are required to engage with education while they participate. They are often 1-3 years’ worth of credits behind. Koinonia partners with charter schools that allow independent studies and flexibility, which empowers youth to obtain high school credits quickly. Koinonia’s Community School hosts a learning center with additional staff available to teach and tutor. In the instance that youth are nearing adulthood and have next to no high school credits, Koinonia will also assist them with studying for and obtaining their GED. Koinonia partners with the county to provide vocational and academic counseling.
Given the nature of Koinonia’s full-immersion experience, youth learn several life skills as if learning them through day-to-day family life. This includes self-care, cleanliness, hygiene, assisting with cooking and other household responsibilities, and doing laundry. While youth are not forced to do this, they have every opportunity to grow into self-sufficiency. Additionally, staff host groups going over finances, applying for jobs, mock interviews, trade skills, relationship building, and more. The career center has several machines and other equipment that assist youth in learning hands-on skills. Youth can apply for jobs and get their license when they are ready.
